PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) smart film is the retrofit alternative to manufactured smart glass. Rather than replacing your existing glass panels entirely, PDLC film is applied directly to the surface — bonding to the glass and connecting to a low-voltage power supply.

The result is identical to expensive manufactured switchable glass panels — at a fraction of the cost and with zero construction disruption. Film is applied to the glass surface, edges are sealed and the low-voltage wiring is connected to the controller and power supply. Typically 2–4 hours per panel.

What is the difference between PDLC film and manufactured switchable glass?

PDLC film is a retrofit product — it is applied to your existing glass panels without removing or replacing the glass. Manufactured switchable glass has the PDLC interlayer built in at the factory and is specified for new builds or full glass replacements. PDLC film is faster to install, lower cost, and ideal for existing offices and homes where glass replacement would be impractical or expensive.

Can PDLC film be applied to any existing glass?

PDLC film is compatible with most standard glass types — single-pane, double-glazed units, toughened and laminated glass. We assess glass type and condition during the free site visit before confirming compatibility. Certain heavily tinted or coated glass surfaces may require surface preparation before application.

What happens if the power fails?

Standard PDLC film defaults to frosted (opaque) when power is off — this is the "fail-frosted" configuration and means the glass provides privacy in any power outage. An alternative "fail-clear" configuration (clear when power off, frosted when powered) is available on request — useful for applications where the open state is the safe default. Specify your preference during consultation.

Can PDLC film be integrated with smart home or BMS systems?

Yes — with a Wi-Fi enabled controller, PDLC film integrates with Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and most building management systems.
